After happily spending his early years in the fungus farms and algae tanks, repairing machinery and keeping the growing things happy, Tobias was transferred to the medical sector (against his wishes) when it was discovered that he was quite as good at patching up people as he was at repairing harvesting machinery.

After witnessing terrible things in the obstetrics ward, which were reported to the families as ‘stillbirths’ and destroyed before being seen by the mothers for their own psychological well-being, Tobias did some after-hours research on family trees and frequency of monstrously malformed infants. To his horror, the genetic aberration was spread widely through the vault’s population, traceable to a founder effect and extended inbreeding. When Tobias presented his findings to the Head of the medical ward, his report was destroyed and the Head had him sent back to the fungus farms—the latter of which was fine with Tobias, but the former rankled. Over time, he was able to reconstruct enough of his original report from memory, publicly available data, and interviews, that he could present a slimmed-down version to the Overseer.

Somehow, he never quite expected he would be a member in the resultant expedition.
